Replacing the anode rod in a hot water tank is a good idea every couple of years because it's a sacrificial component that protects the tank from corrosion, and when it degrades, it can lead to tank failure and costly repairs. Not to mention a wet basement.

Doing it yourself? Call your local plumbing supply and tell them your hot water tank make & model. They'll sell you an anode rod. OR: Ask your favorite plumber. They can do it for you.
